The online income declaration on impots.gouv.fr relies on a pre-filled form provided by the tax administration. Salaries, pensions, and income from movable capital are already included thanks to data transmitted by employers and paying organizations. The taxpayer checks, corrects if necessary, and then validates.

Public Finances Space: the new name that causes confusion

Since 2026, the administration has renamed the former “personal space” to Public Finances Space. This change in terminology confuses taxpayers accustomed to the old name. Both terms refer to the same secure portal on impots.gouv.fr.

In practical terms, the address and functionalities remain the same. Only the interface now displays the new title. If a tutorial or guide still mentions “personal space,” it is indeed the same access.

To connect, there are two options: the tax number and password pair, or the FranceConnect button which allows the use of credentials from an existing account (Ameli, La Poste, etc.). During the first connection of the year, a six-digit security code is sent by email. It must be copied without closing the site page, or else the procedure will need to be restarted.

Before starting to file your declaration online on impots gouv, it is better to gather a few documents: the latest tax notice (for the tax number), bank statements for the year in question, and proof of any deductible expenses.

Verification of pre-filled income on impots.gouv.fr

The most underestimated step of the online declaration is verifying the pre-filled amounts. The administration retrieves data from third-party reporters, but transmission errors occur every year. An employer who reports late, a pension organization that transmits a rounded amount, a misclassified bonus: these discrepancies go unnoticed if the taxpayer validates without reading.

The reliable method is to compare each pre-filled line with reference documents:

  • Taxable net salaries are listed at the bottom of the December payslip or on the annual tax certificate provided by the employer.
  • Pension details are included in the annual statement sent by each fund (CNAV, Agirc-Arrco, etc.).
  • Income from movable capital appears on the unique tax form (IFU) transmitted by the bank, usually available in the online customer space.

If a pre-filled amount is incorrect, it can be modified directly in the form. The administration does not require any proof at the time of entry but may request it later in case of an audit.

Declaration in three clicks: what the simplified option covers (and its limits)

When the tax situation is deemed simple by the system, impots.gouv.fr offers a procedure called “in three clicks.” The taxpayer sees a summary of their pre-filled income, confirms their family situation, and then validates. The declaration is signed in a few minutes.

This simplified version is suitable for employees without additional income, without rental investment, and without specific tax reductions. It does not exempt from verifying the displayed amounts.

When the simplified procedure is not enough

As soon as an additional income comes into play (furnished rental, micro-enterprise, capital gains), specific annexes must be checked. The main form then refers to supplementary declarations (2044 for property income, 2042-C-PRO for self-employed individuals). These annexes are not pre-filled: the taxpayer enters the amounts themselves based on their accounting or statements.

An automatic transfer mechanism moves the totals from the annexes to the main declaration. Ensuring this transfer occurs correctly prevents omissions that trigger follow-ups.

Security of the tax account: vigilance not to be neglected

In September 2026, the DGFiP reported a data theft linked to illegitimate access to its information system. The administration clarified that the online spaces for individuals and professionals had not been compromised, but the incident serves as a reminder of a basic rule: never access your tax space from a link received via email or SMS.

The only safe method is to type impots.gouv.fr directly into the browser’s address bar. Phishing attempts mimic official messages with increasing realism. An email from the DGFiP never asks for a password or to click on a “urgent verification” link.

Deadlines and correction after validation of the declaration

The 2026 declaration calendar sets the opening of the online service on April 9. The deadline for submission depends on the department of residence: deadlines range from May 21 to June 4 for online declarations. Paper declarations, reserved for taxpayers who cannot declare online, have a deadline set for May 19.

A lesser-known advantage: after validation, the online declaration remains modifiable. The correction service generally opens a few weeks after the deadline and remains accessible for several months. This possibility allows for correcting a late-discovered error without going through a formal complaint.

Assistance for deaf or hard of hearing individuals

The declaration assistance service is accessible via the ACCEO platform, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This system, distinct from traditional telephone assistance, offers adapted communication (sign language, real-time transcription). The step-by-step guides available on impots.gouv.fr do not always mention it visibly.

At the end of the online declaration, a declaration situation notice is generated automatically. This document serves as a tax proof with third-party organizations (CAF, bank, landlord) without waiting for the final tax notice, which arrives several months later. Keeping this situation notice as soon as it is generated saves time for any administrative procedure in the meantime.
